Meetings and Programs

August 2011 News Update

I hope this newsletter finds you all staying cool and enjoying your summer. We had a terrific turnout for our trunk show from Judy Holley. I was simply amazed by her cut-out quilts – very striking. After seeing her work several years ago, I shared how much she encouraged me to try different things. I hope to see some great show and tell in the months to come as a result of seeing Judy’s work.

Be sure and remember the meeting date this month, it’s a little early. It’s the 4th Monday, not the last Monday of the month this time. Angie Madden will be bringing our program this month. Angie is a master at dyeing fabric and will be sharing some of her wonderful knowledge on the subject. I took an AHITG dye class from Angie several years ago. What a thrill to “make” my own fabric. It was even more exciting when I used it in a quilt!! I know we will all learn something we didn’t know about the fabric dyeing process.

Remember to be working on your show quilts. I am bringing some souvenir blocks to show, we need to get working on those too. For many of you, this will be your first quilt show. I know there’s a lot to take in. I hope you will consider volunteering to help in some way. There’s no better way to get plugged in and meet people than to sign up!

Hope to see you on the 22nd – come and bring a friend.

Here we are well into the summer – hope you all are having fun. Thanks for all the comments about the “One of a Kind” program last month. I hope you all were inspired to pull out an orphan block or blocks and make something wonderful. This technique is truly something I have enjoyed using for many years to create original quilts.

This month we have a huge treat. Judy Holley is coming to do a trunk show – you will not want to miss this. Her program is called “Opposites Attract! What to look for while digging through your stash”. Her work is incredible and I know we will all pick up a few tips to help us use our stash. Come and bring a friend.

I hope many of you were able to attend the May meeting and enjoy the virtual feast of color, design and workmanship presented by Alice McKinney. Her Baltimore Album quilts were stunning and I enjoyed learning the history of these incredible quilts. We also enjoyed learning to make berries and leaves like a pro!

Thanks to all of you Fat Quarter Fairies who brought goodies last month, our Birthday Basket is full and happy!

The program this month will be presented by me! It’s entitled “One of a Kind Quilts” based on the book by Judy Hopkins. I have enjoyed this quilting technique for almost 15 years and hope to inspire you to make one of your own original quilts! I’ll be doing a mini trunk show of some of the quilts I’ve made and also showing you exactly how to do it with a brand new project. See you at the meeting, come and bring a friend.
