Thru the Eye of the Needle
February 2007
FROM THE PRESIDENTWell, it has been cold, grey, rainy---perfect weather to stay inside and quilt! Hope the crud that is going around misses all of you. The workshop with Judy Holly was wonderful! I think I might even enjoy doing a New York Beauty now. I am looking forward to our next learning opportunity. I am beginning to think of spring with blue skies and daffodils; maybe it’s time to start that blue and yellow quilt I have always planned for someday. How are y’all coming on your 54-40 block? Hope we have a lot to turn in at the Feb. day meeting. Oh, by the way, two of the blocks that Pat Baker had to show and were intended to be the door prize were not returned. If you mistakenly took one, please bring it back. I would be very disappointed to think anyone would intentionally take one. See you at the Feb. meetings, God willing. Angie DAY CHAPTER PROGRAMSIn January I introduced a year long project called "My Favorite Block". Someone will be showing our members their favorite block each month and why it is so. I introduced the "54-40 or Fight" block. My idea was that members who wished to would make a block and bring in back the following month. The blocks would then be turned over to the Community Quilt Committee and made into quilts to be donated to some one in need. I was quite pleased with the response of the members. In February Julie Coffman will be showing her favorite block. I will be sure that enough directions for the block are available to all members. Apologies to those members not receiving directions for January's block (the directions are available on www.quilterscache.com.) February's program will be presented by our fellow member Alma Moates. She is a professional quilt appraiser and has been quilting since the 60's. Alma will be presenting information on quilt appraising and will have many quilts (I think many antique quilts) to show and discuss. Alma is also a collector and an antique dealer as well as an RN. The quilt guild appreciates her informative program. I want to thank Pat Baker for her presentation on Log Cabin quilts in January. Jane Rasmussen NIGHT CHAPTER PROGRAMSWe sure had a special treat last month with Judy Holley's Trunk Show. Seeing such a body of work is such and inspiration and challenge. MEMBERSHIPIf you have not renewed your membership, this will be your last newsletter. You can access a membership form in last month’s newsletter or renew your membership at this month’s meeting. Seventy-five members and five visitors attended the January day meeting. The night meeting was attended by sixty-six members and six visitors. Virginia Moody, Membership COMMUNITY QUILTS INFORMATIONThe night chapter community quilts group will meet at the Azalea Room at Baptist Medical Park on Nine Mile Road and University Parkway on Monday, March 12 from 6 to 9 pm. All members are welcome to attend, whether you regularly attend the day meeting or the night meeting. SUNSHINE COMMITTEEThis committee is set up to recognize those members of PQG that need up lifting, sympathy, or wishes for recovery in cases of surgery, accidents, or loss of a loved one. Please let me know if I can send a word of encouragement to a member. This past week a card was sent to Suzanne Wernick to wish a speedy recovery from her knee surgery. Also cards of sympathy were sent with love to Pat Renfroe and Wynnell Shows. We also sent a thinking of you card to Barbara Goebel. All of these ladies have been long-time supporters and hard workers for the guild. Jane Rasmussen FRAME BASTING COMMITTEEWe will be basting a quilt top on Thursday, March 29 at People’s First Bank on Creighton Road. We will begin setting up at 9:00 and need extra hands by 9:30. Plan to come for some stitching and visiting – bring your thimble; all other supplies are provided. It usually takes about 3 hours so you may want a snack, as well! Any questions please call Linda Richardson. Thanks! AT HOME IN THE GUILDClasses are scheduled for Sat, March 17th, Baltimore Album appliqué Sat. We had sixteen people attend class the first day and eighteen on the second day. A big thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Hawkins, Joyce Cobb’s parents, for hosting the second day in their home. And thanks for all of the delicious covered dishes you ladies brought. Now we have a lot more paper-piecing experience, and I’m looking forward to seeing lots of New York Beauty quilts in our 2008 show. JoAnn Belling will be here in March. Exciting classes are planned, and you won’t want to miss this wonderful opportunity. In addition to teaching two workshops for us, JoAnn will be speaking at the day meeting on March 22nd, and giving a trunk show that evening at the Wright Center.
