Thru the Eye of the Needle

May 2008

FROM THE PRESIDENT

Hello Quilters,

Congratulations Voe Nelson! For those of you that missed the presentation, Voe’s beautifulquilt won the Viewer’s Choice award at our Quilt Show. It was an original design by Voe which makes it all the more special.

I was recently included on a committee discussing Policies and Procedures. During the meeting we discussed the “purpose” of our guild. As stated in our By-Laws: The purpose of the Guild shall be to stimulate an interest in quilts, to promote and advance the art of quilt making, and to conduct educational programs and provide services in the design and techniques of quilt making. The discussion made me question how I can promote and advance the art of quilt making. There are so many techniques I want to learn how to do, so many patterns I haven’t tried. But what about giving back? I’ve never hosted an At Home in the Guild, never given a program. There’s a reason for this……lack of knowledge and experience. That’s the easy answer. The hard answer is I’ve never taken the time to master a technique and gain the confidence to then share my knowledge. So I’m challenging myself to stretch. It’s not so intimidating to invite a small group of women to my house and share something I’ve just learned and am excited about and that’s what At Home in the Guild is all about. Or how about offering your home as the class site and inviting a friend to come and share. Let’s be creative together!

No one has stepped forward to take the Chair position for the Great Gulf Coast Arts Festival so with the help of Sandy Miller we will co-chair the position and continue to have a presence at the Festival. Carolyn Milligan and Barbara Doster have agreed to handle the Boutique and Consignments. We will be having a number of workshops to make items to be sold. We hope to feature a new technique each workshop. We need your input. Please email me with your ideas or requests. In the past we haven’t had great turn-outs for workdays. Let’s all agree to make it different this year.  Watch future newsletters for the details. I know we all have something to share! I see it every meeting during show and share! We are an amazing group that produces beautiful works of art.

One last thing……..I would like to thank Ingrid Whitcher for a great program at April’s evening meeting. She is an inspiration to all of us. She courageously goes where “no man has gone before”! She tries new techniques and then shares them with all of us. She helps us think “outside the box” and stretch our imagination. Thanks Ingrid!

Have a wonderful May! Joyce Thompson

DAY CHAPTER

I hope that you were present at the April meeting to pick up your instructions for the 2008 Quilt Challenge and the Mystery Quilt. I noticed that everyone enjoyed selecting the color cards for the Quilt Challenge. October will be here before you know it so get busy on them right away.

The Mystery Quilt will be so much fun. The first installment you get your fabric, cut, and sew, right away, but don’t think that you will have this one figured out until the last of the three installments.

Please try to have the tops completed by August. Please note the Border fabric requirements listed at the bottom of page 1. You may want to purchase these at the same time you get the fabrics for the quilt. It will not make a difference in the design of the quilt top but it will enhance it and finish it to have the inner border coordinate B fabric and the outer border the Feature fabric.

Oh, also, don’t forget to complete a Favorite Block and turn it in for May. There will be a drawing for a door prize for those who turn in a completed Favorite Block. Remember that the Favorite Blocks all go to Community Quilts. Any questions at all about these things just contact me.

Thanks to all the ladies who took part in the April program and shared “What they had learned from the Quilt Show”. It truly was a wonderful show and I almost hate to leave it behind. But take heart and gear up. Volunteer, get active, and get ready for the next Quilt Show in 2010. It will be here before you know it.

May’s program title is “Journey from Traditional to Art Quilter”. Suzanne Wray will give the program. She is a very talented quilt artist from Australia. I look forward to this program and hope to see you there May 22, 2008.

NIGHT CHAPTER

I'm back from California where I have a beautiful new granddaughter, Kayla Renee, who is doing very well. I also had the chance to visit some quilt shops and will bring information about them to the meeting. I would like to thank Ingrid for giving a wonderful program and Sheree for doing the Quilt Challenge. If you missed getting your quilt challenge last month, I will have more cards available at the meeting The program for this month "I Love Scrappy Quilts" will be presented by Sandy Miller. She has asked members to bring samples of scrappy quilts to share.

QUILT SHOW 2010

Well, all the kits for the 2010 opportunity quilt are out, thanks!!!! Please make every effort to get them back to me by June. I wanted to share some of my visions for this show. I would love to have a quilt from every member. In order to do that, we must have more space.. so the show will be at a different place, more on that later. It will be the last week in Feb. The theme is----Honoring Tradition-Creating the Future. There will be two avenues of expression for the theme category. More on that later.

Well, that is all until my committee heads get together. If you would like to serve with us, please let me know. If you have comments, suggestions please e-mail or write it down.

Thanks, Angie Madden

MEMORIAL FUND

A recent donation to the Memorial Fund was made by Barbara Meloy in honor of Frances Sherrill, one of our Heritage Members. By honoring Frances with this donation we all benefit. The Fund was established to provide the trunk show in alternate years of the Quilt Show and provide awards and grants to our members to further their knowledge of techniques, craftsmanship, and the development of ideas. Our members that accept the grants then come back and share their knowledge with our membership. Please remember you can honor and celebrate anything with a donation to the Memorial Fund. Birthdays, anniversaries, births……….it is only limited by your imagination.

And remember that if there is a class or lecture you are interested in, please contact the MemorialFund committee and discuss an award or grant.

FRAME BASTING

Don't forget - framebasting on Thursday, May 29th at People's First Bank on Creighton Road. Try to arrive by 9:30 - don't forget your thimble (and a sandwich!) - we have two large quilts to baste so there is room for at least 20 people. Please call Linda Richardson with any questions

WORKSHOPS

What a great day we had with Lisa Moore. I was surprised how good a teacher she is and she is so easy to understand. Her patterns and quilts are beautiful. I am working on a class for the end of year with Lisa. We were looking at Nov 8th but that is the Arts Festival so we are now looking at Oct 18th. The class will be on "Visual Color" and I will tell you more later.

Suzanne Wray Landscape Class will be on 6/6/08. Class is full but see me for a Waiting List.

Suzanne Wray Machine Quilting Class will be on 8/02/08. Class is full but see me for a Waiting List.

Suzanne will have a kit for $10.00 for the Landscape Class. For the Machine Quilting Class please have two quilt sandwiches for practice. Both classes you will need a machine and all sewing supplies.

Keep looking for more classes as some new ones are in the works.
