Thru the Eye of the Needle

June—2009

FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear fellow guild member,

As we complete the first half of our year, I would like to remind you there is still a need for a member to set-up and monitor sound at our meetings. We had our first meeting with no sound and many of you were unable to hear Sandy Wolf’s wonderful presentation. This is not fair to our speaker or those in our audience that have limited hearing. Please contact Sheree Jimmerson or Ingrid Whitcher and offer to help. Laurie Berdhal has assured me this is an easy undertaking and she will train you.

I hope each and every member has logged onto our new website and explored. There is so much to be found. You can download directions to our Mystery quilt or block of the month. You can check out pictures of our latest speakers and meetings. You can mail our website address to friends and family to show them our beautiful opportunity quilt and sell them the chance to be the proud owner. The site changes each month as our committee chairs update their committee page so mark our site as one of your favorites and come back often!

I will see you all at this month’s meeting for the completed Mystery quilt reveal and our 2009 Challenge.

Happy quilting. Joyce Thompson

SOUVENIR BLOCKS

201 BLOCKS! That’s how many were turned in at the May day meeting! Keep up the good work, ladies. Any questions or to turn in blocks, see Leni Cable.

DAY CHAPTER

I hope that everyone enjoyed the May program given by Sandy Wolf as much as I did. I never knew there were so many different techniques for appliqué. The ribbon work and beading on the “In the Garden” quilt was exquisite. How patient and precise one must be to make such beautiful handwork. Thank you, Sandy, for the program. Also, thank you to Frances Borowski for her technical assistance in preparing and presenting the Powerpoint program.

The June program will be the 2009 Circle Quilt Challenge. The quilts will be hung for judging, but you do not need to have a sleeve for hanging the quilt. Those attending the meeting will vote for the quilt they feel best used the embellishments and best of show. Once the judging has taken place, then the program will begin. Each quilt maker should be prepared to show and share her quilt with the guild. Here are some ideas of what we want to know: which three embellishments did you use; which embellishments were not used; how you developed your design; how you actually made your quilt. After each quilt maker has shared, then the awards will be announced. I can hardly wait to see all those beautiful quilts and most of all to hear how they were developed.

Also, don’t forget to bring your Mystery Quilt for the group picture.

The Favorite Block called Morning Star was announced last month so you should have your completed blocks to turn in at the June meeting. Those that do so will be eligible for a door prize. Remember, these blocks are turned in to Community Quilts.

See you at the June meeting. Sheree Jimmerson

NIGHT CHAPTER

I hope everyone had a wonderful month and has been busy putting the final touches on their Challenge quilt(s). We will have the display and judging of the quilts at the next meeting. If you do not want your quilt judged, but want it to hang with the others, just let me know at the meeting. I hope everyone will share a little about their quilt during the meeting.

Remember to bring your mystery quilt (top) to the meeting to share at Show-and-Tell It would be great to see a large group of them.

The July meeting will be on borders and bindings. Several members are going to share their tips on “finishing” from a simple binding to scalloped bindings. We will also discuss the right way to attach your borders to keep them from waving and how to do a mitered border. If there is a specific question or technique you would like to be covered, please talk to me at the next meeting or send me an e-mail.

Looking forward to seeing you all at the next meeting. Ingrid Whitcher and Deila Hiebert

COMMUNITY QUILTS/DAY

The Guild has donated 25 quilts to Habitat for Humanity so far this year. The next workshop will be Thursday, June 18, 10 AM – 3 PM at Suzanne Wernick’s home. Space is limited so please reserve your space now. Sewing machines and basic sewing tools are requested. Lunch is provided and a good time is guaranteed.

Suzanne Wernick

GULF COAST ARTS FESTIVAL

November will be here before we know it, and with the crisper, cooler days comes our local annual arts extravaganza otherwise known as the Great Gulfcoast Arts Festival.

For those of you who may be new, the Pensacola Quilt Guild has historically been honored with an invitation to showcase the art of quilting as a featured ‘heritage art’ at the festival. We will be manning a booth throughout the three day event, this year scheduled for November 6-8. Our gorgeous opportunity quilt will anchor the booth and be judged as our entry for the Heritage Arts Award of Excellence. We also have the opportunity to sell articles representative of our art both as boutique items (donated by members to the worthy cause of funding our many guild benefits!) and as consignment pieces.

For now, this is just a reminder to begin working on items for consignment or donation – items that represent our heritage art – and to consider other ways you might contribute to the effort. We have several places to fill on the committee, and I assure you that anyone who volunteers will find that they get more out of the experience than they put in. (Which translates as “Try it, it’s fun!”)

Committee chairman: Linda Siska Co-chair: Sandy Miller Boutique: Barbara Doster and Carolyn Milligan Consignment chair: maybe you? Staffing chair: another chance to volunteer . . . Set-up and take down committee: for the agile amongst you

If you are interested in serving on the committee, having fun, getting to know your fellow guild members a bit better, and relieving your nagging conscience ALL at the same time, please let me know.

Thanks and double thanks: Linda Siska
