Thru the Eye of the Needle

July—2009

FROM THE PRESIDENT

Hello Quilters,

With the heat of summer upon us, spending time quilting seems like an easy choice but it doesn’t always work out that way. I, like many of you, have been out of town visiting with family and friends. A large group of us will also be gone this month to the Knoxville Quilt Show. While out of town you can always keep in touch by visiting our website and view the latest postings by our program chairs. Check out the winners of our 2009 Challenge. Congratulations, all!

Our By-Laws, Policy, and Procedures Committee met this month and did its yearly review. This is not an exciting or fun committee so I’m grateful to our committee volunteers. Each and every committee member cares passionately for our guild and is committed to its growth and success. Thank you to all those that participated. We would like to update our Quilt Related Resource list in the library. Please email me at joycethomp@mchsi.com if you would like to be included. If you quilt for hire, teach, have a shop, have a quilt related product……..you get the idea, send me your info. I will be compiling the list and posting it in our library for our members. The deadline is August 20, 2009. The new list will be posted on August 27, 2009.

I hope each of you had a wonderful 4th of July and continue to enjoy your time this month

Joyce Thompson

DAY CHAPTER

The Circle Quilt Challenge at last month’s meeting was a wonderful venue to see the outcome of all those creative ideas you ladies possess. When you accept and complete one of these challenges it causes you to “think outside the box,” to design with items that you would not normally use, and to sew a quilt different than what you might usually make. It definitely stretches us. I encourage everyone in the future to accept the challenge. You never know where it might take you. Thanks to everyone who participated. Here are the winners:

  • Best of Show:
    • First: Kathy Coverdale
    • Second: Sylvia Wheeler
    • Third: Sheree Jimmerson
  • Best Use of Grab Bag:
    • First: Betsy Jordan
    • Second: Francis Borowski
    • Third: Sue Rivait

The July meeting will cover “Tips, Techniques, and Tricks of the Trade.” Members are invited to come prepared to share. Make sure you have listed several of your favorite tips and techniques or most unusual or just the ones that you use the most,. Write them down so you don’t forget. Everyone who shares will be eligible for a door prize. It should be lots of fun.

August is our annual Jumble Sale. This is an indoor “garage sale” more or less. Any guild member is eligible to “rent” a table to display her items for sale. The sale items can be anything that you want. Clean out your sewing room, make things to sale, or if you just need some extra cash, now is the time. Plan for it now. Please email or phone to let me know if you want to reserve a table.

September’s program will be on “Bindings and Borders.” Anyone who would like to share a technique, contact me. See you at the July meeting.

NIGHT CHAPTER

It was so wonderful to see all of the beautiful and innovative challenge quilts last month. You all arose to the occasion! It was also really neat to hear how the grab bags inspired each of you. Thank you for sharing your stories.

At the July meeting we will discuss techniques for putting on borders and bindings. Several of our members have graciously volunteered to teach us special finishing techniques. Since we have a special teacher coming for the August program, we are going to postpone the Jumble Sale to November.

Looking forward to seeing each of you at the July meeting.

SAYING GOODBYE

So long, adieu, aloha, farewell ….

However you say it, I don’t like goodbyes. After more than 25 years in Pensacola, I am moving to Colorado to live with my daughter, Kathy, who has built a new home with a grandmother suite (and an elevator).

While I was not a charter member, it has been almost 25 years since I joined the Pensacola Quilters Guild. I have learned a lot and already forgotten some of it. But I have embarked on a mission to have a quilt for each grandchild when they get married (total of ten altogether).

Every quilter has something special: techniques, setting choices, use of wonderful color and friendliness. Some ideas work better than old habits and some don’t, but at least we can try them out. So, to old friends and new, that nasty word …. Goodbye!!
