FROM THE PRESIDENTHello Fellow Quilters! Although many of us were out of town, I heard the programs for July were very informative and helpful. Thank you to all that participated. Please remember to email or call Sheree Jimmerson and reserve a table for our Jumble sale this month. If you don’t think you have enough to fill a table, go in with a friend or two and reserve the table together. The Jumble Sale is always well attended so there’s a good chance you will find a treasure or two to take home. The Knoxville Quilt Expo was inspirational. Ingrid Whitcher’s and Angie Madden’s quilts were beautiful. Congratulations to them both for being accepted into the show. We are very lucky to have exceptional quilters in our midst! I kept thinking while walking among the quilts that our quilt show is on par with Knoxville’s. Our quilts are beautiful and inspirational, too. We are so fortunate to belong to a guild that has so much talent and its sole purpose is to promote and advance the art of quilt making through educational programs. I realized the inspiration of Knoxville was not only the quilts I saw while at the show, but the women in the car with me driving back to Pensacola, my friends and fellow quilters, and every one of you who bring your show and share each month. We inspire each other to take our quilting to the next level. Please remember this for our 2010 Quilt Show. When the applications become available, take at least one and enter a quilt. Beginner quilters inspire us with their enthusiasm. Advanced quilters inspire us with their vision and talent. Average quilters inspire us with their perseverance to improve. We are a community of quilters enjoying the process of our art. Happiness and joy to you all, Joyce Thompson DAY CHAPTERThanks to everyone who shared tips and techniques at the July Day meeting. I really learned a lot. Hope that you did, too. For those who missed the meeting, check out PQG website under Day Programs for a few of those tips. The August 27 meeting will be the Jumble Sale. This is a fun inside “garage sale” where members can sell their goods. If you are interested in renting a table for $5.00, please call or email me. Remember since this is a quilt guild, so anything related to quilts, sewing, or organization of such will probably sell best. At the August meeting I will also be collecting those Favorite Blocks of the Month that you have completed for Community Quilts. Each block turned in makes you eligible for a door prize and of course helps our guild charity. September’s program will be on Borders and Bindings. If you are willing to share a technique, please call or email me. See you at the August meeting. . Sheree Jimmerson NIGHT CHAPTERI hope all of you are planning to attend our evening program this month with special speaker Flavin Glover. She will be sharing her quilts with us at the night meeting and teaching classes the following day. I misspoke at the July meeting and announced that Cena Harmon would have the August program; however, she is scheduled for September! I trust all of you are busy making quilts for the quilt show. I have really enjoyed show and share lately – seeing all of your wonderful quilts. See you at the meeting Ingrid Whitcher and Deila Hiebert GULF COAST ARTS FESTIVALNovember will be here before we know it, and with the crisper, cooler days comes our local annual arts extravaganza otherwise known as the Great Gulfcoast Arts Festival (http://www.ggaf.org/). For those of you who may be new, the Pensacola Quilt Guild has historically been honored with an invitation to showcase the art of quilting as a featured ‘heritage art’ at the festival. We will be staffing a booth throughout the three-day event, this year scheduled for November 6-8. Our gorgeous opportunity quilt will anchor the booth and be judged as our entry for the Heritage Arts Award of Excellence. At the Festival, we are granted an opportunity to sell articles representative of our art both as boutique items and as consignment pieces. Traditionally, a guild represents mastery of workmanship and it is this mastery which we are privileged to showcase. We hope to include quilted items of all shapes and sizes – from I-pod holders, handbags, table runners, baskets, and Christmas stockings to bed quilts and wall-hangings made by all of our talented quilters. If you are short on inspiration, current quilting magazines can be a great source for what is HOT and what is NOW. Since our yearly dues fall woefully short of operating expenses, our Guild makes up the shortfall with the occasional fundraiser, and the Boutique at the GGAF is one of them. So we need you one and all, and ask that everyone donate two items to a worthy cause! If you haven’t already, bring your donations to the August, September or October meetings.. And of course, we need volunteers to help staff the booths (It really is fun. And you get free coffee and doughnuts!) Carolyn McMullen is taking names of volunteers. We also need demonstrators to do hand sewing. Consignment guidelines are as follows
If you are consigning only a few small items this year, you may bring them to the September or October meetings and turn them in, along with a completed consignment sheet, to either Barbara Doster or Carolyn Milligan. If you are consigning large items or a large number of items, you will need to bring them to our booth at GGAF on Thursday, November 5, 2:00-5:00 pm, and pick up any unsold items at the close of the festival on Sunday. (If you are unable to do so, let us know and we’ll work something out. Your consignment sheet should be completed in advance with your items priced and ready to go. Consignment sheets will be available at the August, September and October meetings, along with price tags you may use if you wish. Please note the following: Consignment sheets must be completed ahead of time. Price each item, add 10% if you are working at least two hours during the festival; 25% if you are not. Calculate a 7.5% sales tax on the combined total, then round the figure up or down to the nearest quarter so that we don’t have to handle small change. Items must also be tagged ahead of time—with the rounded price, member’s name or initials (ID), and a consignment number. All this information can be taken from the worksheet. Make sure a tag is securely fastened to each item. Any questions? Give me a ring and I’ll do my best to figure out an answer Linda Siska, Committee Chair Co-Chair: Sandy Miller Souvenir Blocks: Leni Cable Bontique & Consignment: Barbara Doster & Carolyn Milligan Staffing: Carolyn McMullen Member at Large: Joyce Thompson SOUVENIR BLOCKSI am looking forward to seeing all of you and a big pile of blocks at the next meeting. Leni has suggested adding red, white, and blue blocks and fall color blocks, and someone has asked for blue and white. We still need all the other themes, especially Christmas. Please give the Pensacola star block a try. it is easy and makes a beautiful block. The strip blocks are 8-1/2” foundation sewn diagonal. Any questions, see Fran Moore or Leni Cable. The guild is preparing to: (1) Expand its library collection with the purchase of a new shelving unit, and (2) open the whole day and evening collection at all regular meeting of the guild starting at the October meeting. Thanks to additional budget available for equipment purchase, the shelving unit, specially made for our needs, will help both the day and night librarians to ease the present shelving shortage. It also allows for additional materials to be added to the collection. We librarians hope to have the new shelving operable this fall. Meanwhile, both librarians will be collecting your suggestions for new materials. Please, use a 3×5 card or facsimile to write your suggestions and give to the librarians. We hope to collect as many of these materials as budget and space allow. Thanks to all involved in assisting with these projects. ALERT ! The day librarian is collecting used books for the 2010 Quilt show to be sold in the boutique. About 75 books have already been donated. Thanks to all donors! Five more quilts are in the hands of volunteer guild members to be completed by the August guild meeting. We are really moving right along!. Let’s get together and make a lot of quilts for a good cause. Suzanne Wernick NEW HERITAGE MEMBERCongratulations to Alice Hunter who recently received a Heritage Member Award. She joins the ranks of those other members who have been recognized for their contribution to the art of quilting and the guild. TIPS FOR BETTER BORDERSChoose a basic wrap border for easy application or to square up a quilt top and frame a quilt evenly. A basic wrap border uses less fabric than a mitered border. Basic wrap borders work best with solid fabrics or all-over prints. The busier the print, the less visible the seams appear. Whenever possible use some fabric from the center in the border, or vice versa — it ties the two together.
