September—2009 From the PresidentI hope all of you were able to enjoy Flavin Glover and her wonderful quilts at our night meeting. I know the workshops were educational and fun. As we go into the fall, our nominating committee will be working hard to fill all of the 2010 positions. Please don’t make their job any harder by refusing their call to help. If you are interested in helping, you can always call Carolyn Milligan. Carolyn is looking for both new and old members to step forward and bring new ideas and spirit to our committees and board. I would also like to remind all of you attending our meetings to please help with the setup and takedown of our meetings. It is especially important when we are in the Fellowship Hall (the small building). A quote by John Heywood, “Many hands make light work,” would be helpful to remember on meeting days. Thank you to all that have been sharing during show and tell. The talent in our group is obvious. It is truly my favorite part of our meetings. Enjoy your time, use it well! Joyce Thompson Day ChapterThanks to everyone who helped and participated in the Jumble Sale last month. Even with the rain we had a great turnout. I found some “wonderful” items, and I hope you did, too. If anyone lost a gift card, please call or see me at the next meeting. The September meeting will be all about Borders & Bindings. Several members will give demonstrations of different techniques, but I will need everyone’s help with this. I am requesting that anyone who has any tips or techniques related to Borders and Bindings to be prepared to share it at the meeting. I have seen those beautiful quilts you all create, so I know you have the expertise. Share it with us all so that we can learn and grow. The new Favorite Block of the Month and the annual Christmas Charity will be announced. See you in September. Sheree Jimmerson Souvenir BlocksThe Pensacola Star blocks that have been turned in are spectacular! Won’t you try it this month? Go to the PQG website and click on the treasure chest logo in the upper right corner. Read the two changes to the pattern then get started. We can always use more of the 8 1/2” foundation diagonal strip-pieced blocks. Keep in mind each one represents $1 in the quilt show income. Any questions, call Leni Cable or Fran Moore Community Quilts/DayCommunity Quilts day workshop met on August 22 for the fourth meeting of 2009. Six quilt tops were produced and more are in process. The fifth and last meeting of the year will be held on October 16 at the home of Suzanne Wernick. The goal to donate of 50 quilts in 2009 to Habitat for Humanity is definitely in reach. Six quilts will be delivered to Habitat after the September meeting, which will put us at 35. Thanks go out to all who have supported this project. Suzanne Wernick At Home in the Guild
We had another great dye class at Angie Madden’s house. We always come away with beautiful hand-dyed fabric. Some of you got to see it at the night show & share .Thank you, Angie, for giving of your time to teach At Home in the Guild classes. Don’t forget it is very important to be on time and set up before class. Start time…. The location and starting time of the class will be on the supply sheet. The supply list will be e-mailed or you may pick them up at meetings closer to time of class. Barbara Doster Quilts of the Coastal South: Quilts by Quilt Guild Members from Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana and MississippiWho is the American quilter? She- or he- is one of 27 million Americans who call quiltmaking a pastime, a hobby, a passion, or a necessity. Many, if not most, of these quilters belong to a quilt guild. Membership in a quilt guild provides friendship, education, support and a framework for community service for the individual quilter. If you are a quilter and move to a new community, the quickest way to make friends is to join a local quilt guild. The National Quilt Museum (Museum of the American Quilter’s Society) invites members of guilds in the region comprised of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, and Mississippi to submit quilts that represent their best work for inclusion in a juried exhibit. Quilts of the Coastal South will highlight the work of quiltmakers from these five states who are the mainstream of quiltmaking today. Entries due October 22, 2009 Quilts of the Coastal South exhibit dates February 5 – April 6, 2010 For submission guidelines go to the museum’s website Dates to Remember
