Thru the Eye of the Needle

From the President

Hello fellow quilters,

I would like to thank all those who participated in the Great Gulf Coast Arts Festival by giving of your time and donated items. Linda Siska led a hardworking committee of Barbara Doster, Carolyn McMullen, Sandy Miller, and Carolyn Milligan. Our booth looked wonderful and many nice comments were received on the variety and the workmanship of items. It is only by the generosity of you, our members, that makes this event so successful. Our beautiful Opportunity Quilt won an Award of Excellence and a $100 prize. It was the focal point of our booth and drew many people in to take a closer look.

Don’t forget to mark your calendars for our end-of-year meetings;

  • November 16 & December 14— night meeting
  • November 19 & December 17— day meeting

We are still looking for members to step forward and fill some positions that are still open for 2010. Don’t hesitate – call Carolyn Milligan today and say YES, I can help!

I am thankful for all of you, for your friendships, for your inspiration, for the joy you bring to my life.

Happy Thanksgiving,

Joyce Thompson

Night Chapter

I trust you all have had a great month. The cooler weather is sure helping to get me in the holiday mood. Remember that our November meeting date is a week earlier than usual. We are going to have our Jumble Sale – tables are still available ($5 each). I will be at the church at about 5:30 pm to unlock and get the tables in order. If you are interested in a table—or two— please let me know before the meeting so that I will have sufficient time to get everything set and a plan of how the tables will fit. We will not have a business meeting this month.

We are also planning our December meeting/Christmas party. I still need helpers for set-up/clean up. I will have a sign-up sheet at the November meeting for finger foods, desserts and drinks. The guild will provide the coffee and paper products. You may want to start thinking about the gift exchange – we are still planning on Dirty Santa/ Yankee Trade unless there is another idea. We are going to celebrate the November and December birthdays, have Show and Share and a Trunk Show given by Bette Haddon. Please mark your calendars and plan to attend.

Hope to see you all at the next meeting.

Day Chapter

The October program “Let’s look at String Quilts” was wonderful, don’t you think? Again, I would like to thank Agnes Adkison for sharing her insight and information and everyone who showed their string quilts, as well. I just love programs where the audience participates. Our guild is blessed to have so many talented quilters who have a spirit of sharing.

Please note the change in the November meeting date. Because of the Thanksgiving holiday, it will be a week earlier than usual. The program title is “What to Do When You Don’t Have New.” Bunny Cummings will be the speaker. This is one that you don’t want to miss. We will also be voting for our 2010 PQG Officers, so come and cast your vote.

The December meeting also will be a week earlier than usual. The Installation of the 2010 Officers will take place. Afterward we will have snacks and a time to socialize. Make plans now to bring your specialty “finger food” and celebrate the holidays with us.

Sheree Jimmerson

At Home in the Guild

Basket class—Monday, November 16.

We had two great At-Home classes this past month. Sheree Jimmerson taught hand quilting where we learned so many great tips. Who knows….maybe I will “just do it” one day. Kathy Bullard’s curvaceous curves class also was a big hit. Wait until those quilts are finished. Maybe we will have a trunk show on that class. And, as always, Angie Madden’s dye class was a HUGE SUCCESS!. Thank you, ladies, for the time you give to the guild. Getting to know your quilting friends at these classes are just as great as the classes themselves.

Barbara Doster

President-Elect

I want to thank everyone who has stepped forward to be an Officer or to hold a chair for our guild in 2010. Because of the wonderful volunteering, all of the positions are filled with the following exceptions:

  • Publicity
  • Quilt Show for 2012
  • Great Gulf Arts Festival
  • At Home In the Guild Assistant

It takes many people to keep our exceptional guild running smoothly. If you are interested in any of the above positions or want to be involved in any way, please contact me (see directory for contact information).

Carolyn Milligan

Children’s Exhibit at Quilt Show

At the upcoming Quilt Show we will have an area to display our children’s, grandchildren’s ,nieces’, nephews’ or other family members’ quilts. So let’s get them sewing so we can have a bigger display this year. They will not be judged, but there will be a $3.00 fee for insurance. I will have the forms for you in November and they are due back in January. These items will not be turned in the same day as judged quilts, but on the day of set-up for the Show. Or if they are small, you can turn them in to me earlier.

If you need more information, please call Barbara Doster.

Registration Will Close on November 21 for the 2010 Quit Show!

Please turn in your Quilt Show paperwork, two pictures of your quilt, $5 per entry and a self-addressed envelope at either Day or Night meeting, or you may mail them to Susan Rivait (see directory for address) We will have a “finish-up-the-paperwork” session on Saturday November 21,, 9 a.m. to noon, at Cena Harmon’s house (see directory for address and phone number if you need directions to her house). We can take pictures of your quilt and/or help you with the paperwork. I still have some registration forms left, so if you haven’t picked yours up yet, time is running out. Your quilt does not need to be finished for the photos. If you have any questions about registration, just call me (Susan Rivait).

PQG Christmas Project

Wow – - The night guild attendees are incredibly generous! Not only did I collect 13 gift cards, but I also received $250 for the purchase of additional cards. AND four pillow cases were turned in early. It is so gratifying in the face of this economic downturn to feel the love and compassion we can share with those who are less fortunate.

I will be at the evening meeting in November to collect pillowcases and $10 gift cards from Target for the abused and abandoned kids supported by the Children’s Home Society. The money will purchase Christmas gifts for the children and give them something to smile about in this season that represents the spirit of giving. I am hoping for 12 additional cards to meet what I think is a reasonable goal of $500. If I collect 13 cards, I will beat last year’s total. Will you help?

Cena Harmon

With Thankful Hearts

The year has turned its circle,
The seasons come and go.
The harvest all is gathered in
And chilly north winds blow.
Orchards have shared their treasures,
The fields, their yellow grain,
So open wide the doorway,
Thanksgiving comes again.
Wishful Thinking

May your stuffing be tasty
May your turkey be plump,
May your potatoes and gravy
Have nary a lump.
May your yams be delicious
And your pies take the prize,
And may your Thanksgiving dinner
Stay off your thighs!

2010 Quilt Show Update

2010. It has seemed like forever away, but it is just around the corner. Registration is still underway, but will close on November 21. If you have any kind of non-judged item: a garment, quilted items for the home, framed quilted item or antique quilt, please see me for the appropriate entry form.

I am so proud of all who are selling tickets for the opportunity quilt, some have picked up their second or third packet of 24. Great Job!!!! Everyone please help in this way, by buying or selling at least some. Also thanks for making blocks for the show; keep up the good work!!

Let’s make a strong push to have the best show we can.

Thanks,

Angie Madden

Souvenir Blocks

Ladies, the end of the call for the souvenir blocks for the quilt show is in sight!!

In the next couple of months, please concentrate on blocks in black and white, bright colors, pastels, red, white and blue in the foundation-pieced diagonal strip-pieced blocks. We also need lots of Pensacola star blocks. Please give it a try. Instructions are on the PQG website. Any questions, see Fran Moore or Leni Cable.

Calendars, Red Hot Calendars

Calendars are in and they’re gorgeous! Price starts at $12 each for four or more, up to $15 for a single. They make great gifts, so plan on picking up one (or two or three) at the November or December guild meetings, day or night. See you there.
