Thru the Eye of the Needle

From the President

Dear PQG members,

As 2009 comes to a close I can’t help but reflect over the past year. Our program chairs, Ingrid and Sheree, have done a fabulous job this year. The variety of programs and knowledge shared has made us all better quilters. The opportunity for classes through Workshops and At Home in the Guild were many and varied. The quilts produced by our two community quilt groups have gone out to our community and are being used and loved by those in need. Our booth at the Gulf Coast Arts Festival was one of the best ever. The beautiful donations by all of you, our members, represented the best of quilting and our guild. We have all contributed to making the Pensacola Quilters Guild a guild that truly reflects the joy of quilting.

Thank you all for making me feel welcomed and loved. These past two years have been challenging at times but always rewarding. Thank you to those that have stepped forward and will serve us next year on our board and in committees. They will need all of our help, so please continue to be generous with your time when called upon to work. This is a wonderful guild and I’m proud to be a part of it!

I will not be with you this month at our December meetings. I’m off to Seattle for the birth of our grandson. Enjoy our end of the year parties and I’ll see you in January.

With much thanks and gratitude for your help and support,

Joyce Thompson

Night Chapter

I encourage all of you to attend the December 14 festivities. There will be a trunk show by former member Bette Haddon as well as the usual show and share. The Guild will furnish coffee and paper goods, and I’m asking members to bring finger foods, desserts and other drinks (sodas, tea, etc.)

For those who wish to participate in the “dirty Santa” gift exchange, please bring a wrapped gift of approximately $5 in value.

We will also celebrate November and December birthdays.

I hope to see all of you there.

Day Chapter

What a refreshing and humorous program we had in November given by Bunny Cummings. I hope that each and everyone takes the time to tell her how much you enjoyed “What to Do When You Don’t Have New.” Thank you, Bunny, for sharing with us.

Our December meeting will be on the 17th, which is a change from our normal meeting date so mark your calendars now and don’t miss it. Also, please bring holiday-themed items for Show and Share and your favorite “finger food.” The guild will provide the beverages. We plan to have a time to socialize and enjoy each other and the holidays. There will be an Installation Ceremony for the incoming officers of 2010. Come and welcome the new officers, say farewell and thanks to the outgoing officers, and encourage one another in our quilting projects. Hope to see you December 17 and Merry Christmas one and all.

Sheree Jimmerson

Passing the Baton

All 2009 and 2010 officers and chairpersons are asked to attend the January 7, 2010, board meeting at Peoples Bank on Creighton Road. Outgoing officers and chairpersons should bring their binders along with end-of-year reports to pass on to the incoming members who are assuming new positions and responsibilities.

At Home in the Guild

The last two years have been a great experience for me as chairman of AHITG. I have learned so much from the guild members who taught the classes, as well as getting to know the members better and making new friends.

You have a great new chairman, Linda Siska. I am looking forward to taking advantage of the things she has planned for you and encourage you to do so as well.

Thanks again to all who taught classes this last year.

Workshops

Our first workshop of the New Year will be given by Scott Murkin our quilt show judge. He will give a 6-hour class on Wednesday February 24. You may look at his work by going to www.scottmurkin.com. The class will be on his strata techniques that create the illusion of layers and depth in your quilts. I will have a sign up sheet at our next meeting or you may call me. I know it’s our Christmas Party but we have only two months left.

I am looking forward to being the workshop chair this coming year. If you have a teacher you would like us to bring to our guild, please let me know.

Silent Auction Update

The quilts are starting to come in!! It’s so exciting to see the next group of awesome quilts that will be shown in our Silent Auction exhibit. You can bring your quilt to any regular meeting. Remember to put a 2” sleeve on the back. I hope some of you have taken the “Triple Play” challenge. Inspiration is everywhere – ask a friend and take the plunge. I know there has been a lot going on for all of us – but this has been an important part of the last few shows and I know we want to continue the tradition. I will give a sneak peak of the exhibit soon. Thanks for your participation.

Anyone Interested?

At the GGAF we had a number of requests from people who are looking for quilters to do custom work. We’ve compiled a list of names and numbers for anyone who is interested. Requests range from:

  • Has a wall-hanging she would like quilted
  • Has an old quilt he/she would like repaired
  • Have quilt blocks she would like put together
  • Wants quilting done on a circle quilt.

If you are interested in any of the above, please contact Linda Siska for further details

PQG Christmas Project

We are fabulously rich in gifts of the spirit! The night members donated a total of $740 worth of Target gift cards to the children sponsored by the Children’s Home Society and 35 of the most adorable pillowcases you have ever seen. We had Star Wars and Jedi knights; we had dogs, cats, dragons, and fish; we had stripes and flowers; fairies and race cars. In essence, we had everything a boy or girl could imagine.

Thank you so much for your generosity. It was a pleasure to share the spirit of the season in advance!

Calendars

Still selling calendars. Hope you are still buying!! Look for me at day and night meetings this December, insinuating myself into the Christmas parties with my crass commercialism. Come. Buy. Enjoy. Give to others. Sell to others. Let’s move these calendars!

2010 Quilt Show Update

Time is running out to win one of the three quilts that are prizes for selling the most opportunity quilt tickets! You still have about two months, so if you want one of those, get busy! We have our T-shirts in. Please see Janet Swalley for one; they would make great Christmas presents. They are only $10 . We have our pins, and our calendars both of which would make great stocking stuffers for friends or family.

Registration is done. Now those who want to make a garment or other non-judged item can work on that. I will need an idea of what will be displayed by the end of January, so see me at the next meetings for forms.

I will have posters to start placing in January. If you would put one at work, or in small stores, or on church bulletin board, please see me. Please send one of our postcards to all your quilting friends for Christmas so they will know about the show. Our show is now listed on SSQA’s web site. I can’t think of anything else I need to tell you.

If you have questions, please email or call me.

Great Gulf Coast Arts Festival

Once again, we had a fabulous Great Gulf Coast Arts Festival! The weather was perfect (hard to believe as I put up hurricane shutters the very next day) Our gorgeous opportunity quilt earned us a GGAF Heritage Art Award of Excellence in the amount of $100, and we received a ‘best display ever’ compliment from Paula Lou Mapoles, GGAF Heritage Arts Chairman.

We had a great time telling people about quilting, about our guild, and about our upcoming quilt show. We also made a significant amount of money for the guild and its members. Of the $2,355.50 in sales, $1,108.50 went to members for their consignments and $1,247.00 to the guild.

Thank you, thank you, thank you to one and all who made possible our very successful participation in the Great Gulf Coast Festival. We had a wonderful display thanks to all those who consigned, those who donated, and those who worked on our beautiful opportunity quilt. And we couldn’t have done it without those who volunteered their time – all those who worked in our booth during the festival: Sandy Wolf who set up our display, and Mary Beth Svoboda who did consignment take-in and returns. And I would like to send an especially big thanks to my committee members – Sandy Miller, my committee co-chair; Barbara Doster and Carolyn Milligan who took care of sales and donations; Carolyn McMullen who oversaw staffing; and Joyce Thompson, member-at- large. It wouldn’t have happened without all of you!

Library News

The list for ordering new books is growing…and orders will be made when our new book case arrives. Right now my house is full of books waiting to be processed for the library, with nowhere to place them at the present in the Guild book cases. Also, I am collecting books for the 2010 Quilt Show Boutique which are consuming house space, too. Patience is a virtue and I know that guild members will bear with me as we make our transition to our new place, opening the entire library to all members at both meetings and expanding our library. Thanks for the patience!

NOTICE: Both Day and Night Libraries will NOT be open during the holiday meetings in December. Anyone taking out books in November will not have books due until January meeting 2010. Patti Struck will take returns only at the December night meeting. No librarian will be available at the December day meeting.

As we wind down 2009, I have been inventorying library materials. Part of that process included phone calls to members with outstanding books. Listed below are members’ names and dates books were taken from the library. The overdue fee is $1.00 per month. Let’s get all those books back so others can use them! Just a reminder to:

  • Judy Benford, Super Simple Strips & Quick Rotary Cutter Quilts 6/24/09
  • Kim Brackett, Quilts from Aunt Amy 7/27/09
  • Annie Carnley, Round Robin Quilts 8/21/09
  • Carol Hicks, Sets and Sashings 5/22/09
  • Betsy Jordon, Beautiful Foundation Pieced Quilt Blocks 8/26/09
  • Nell Lewis, American Quilter Magazine, March , 2008 9/25/09
  • S. McCarson, Guide to Machine Quilting 6/23/08 ( $16 owed – over a year)
  • Ginny McDaris, Shashiko 7/28/09
  • Shirlie Pollard, Basic Applique & Curved Two Patched System 9/28/09

  • Mary Wilbur, String Quilts with Style & Japanese Art Quilt III 10/22/09
  • Donna Zick, New Cuts for New Quilts 1/26/09

Please, see the librarians if you have questions concerning this list!

Thanks to all those donating books to both our library and for the Show Boutique! We will continue to collect books for the show until Feb. 15, 2010. Leave your donations at the library in January. Thanks!

Have a wonderful Holiday!
